Understand credits & automatic top-up

Every check spends research-unit credits — know your cap, watch it in real time, and decide for yourself whether prepaid top-ups are worth turning on. You are never billed after the fact.

What you get

  • A monthly research-unit allocation sized to your plan, refreshed each billing period.
  • A running usage view at Settings → Usage, so you see the number before you hit it, not after.
  • Credit packs you can buy any time, and an opt-in automatic top-up — never a silent charge.

How credits work

A research unit is spent every time MarginTide runs a check, whether you trigger it with Run now or a schedule runs it for you. Basic, Pro, and Max each carry a fixed monthly allocation; Enterprise's allowance is a funded figure set by your contract, and credit packs and automatic top-up are not offered there. Settings → Usage shows what you've used this period and what's left.

When you reach your limit

Your limit is a hard stop. A check that would go past your included allocation does not run, and nothing is billed for it. You have three ways forward: wait for the next billing period, buy a credit pack (packs start at 100 checks and come in multiples of 100), or turn on automatic top-up.

Automatic top-up

Automatic top-up is opt-in per workspace. When it is on and a run would go past your limit, the next credit pack — 100 checks by default, or a multiple of 100 that you choose — is charged to your card before the work runs. If the payment doesn't go through, the run stops and nothing is spent. You also set a limit on how much can be topped up each billing period, up to a ceiling for your plan. Turn it on or off any time from Settings → Usage; it is never on by default.

Keep cost predictable

If you'd rather stay strictly inside your allocation, leave automatic top-up off — runs beyond it are refused with a clear message instead of charged. Settings → Usage is the place to watch the trend before you decide either way. If you buy a pack and don't use all of it, only the unused part can be refunded.

Runs on your own key

Connecting your own provider key doesn't remove the cap — a run billed to your key still draws from the same monthly allocation, just at a reduced weight, so it counts for less against your cap than a platform-funded run. See Use your own AI provider key for how to connect one.
